Movie at the Fargo Theatre

Movie dates might be a classic choice, but watching a movie inside a 1920s vaudeville theater takes this date to a new level.

Experience Fargo's nightlife

Fargo's nightlife has something for everyone. Want live music? Check out The Aquarium for local and regional bands. Want classy drinks? You got 'em at one of the upscale bars in Downtown Fargo. Want to dance? The floors of several bars await.

Cooking class

Square One Kitchens hosts cooking classes in their commercial kitchen. If you or your date love cooking (or even if you're terrible at it), cooking together is always a fun way to get to know each other, and dinner is built-in! The 1889 is another place for cooking and crafting classes, they have tons to choose from so check out their upcoming events.

Grab drinks at a brewery

Fargo has great breweries, so you have lots of options, from the large and beautiful to intimate and cozy.

Brunch

Let's face it: people love brunch. Luckily, Fargo has some great ones, from the Bloody Mary bar at Pounds or bottomless mimosas at Marge's to the jazz brunch at Rosewild.

Live theater

If a standard movie feels to cliche, mix it up with a live-action show. Fargo's theater companies always have something going on, from the Trollwood Mainstage Musical in the summertime to shows at Theatre B in the winter.

Trivia night

If Fargo had a middle name, it would be trivia. You can find trivia nights nearly every night of the week at bars across Fargo.

Put your brains together over drinks and test your general knowledge.

Art or painting night

For something artsy, you've got options. Check the Plains Art Museum schedule for classics like sculpting or pottery, or you can head to Clay Your Way for fun pottery painting activities.

Unglued hosts crafting events where you can make everything from flower pots to needlepoint pillows.

Pixeled Brewing & arcade

Fargo's only brewery and arcade is the ideal mix for a date. Grab one of their small-batch craft beers, some coins, and get playing on one of the 55 arcade games lining the wall.

Open mic comedy night

Rent kayaks or canoes

The Red River of the North splits North Dakota from Minnesota and is nature's gift to the dating world.

Note: If you're not great golfers, don't worry, you can head to El Zagal to play a shorter course without the pressure or try a game of footgolf.

Ride a bike along the river

Fargo has over 200 miles of bike trails. Some of the best wind along the Red River, giving you great views and exercise in one fell swoop.

Rooftop drinks

Drinking with views over the city is romantic and fun, and you have tons of options.

Rhombus Guys rooftop is one of the most popular options in Downtown Fargo (stay late enough on a Friday in the summer and you can join in their rooftop movie night), or check out Camp Lone Tree for games and drinks with some of the best views.

Visit a winery

Surrounding Fargo-Moorhead are gorgeous vineyards and wineries making varieties from North Dakota-grown grapes. One of your closest options is Bear Creek Winery, which has stunning views and delicious wines.

Farmers' markets

Meet up at one of Fargo-Moorhead's many farmers' markets for a morning or afternoon of shopping local produce and goods, listening to live music, and eating food truck dishes together.

One of your best options is the Saturday morning Red River Market (the biggest farmers' market in the state!).

Outdoor show or concert

Midwesterners take advantage of warm summer nights by heading to outdoor theater shows and music concerts. You and your date can capitalize on this, too.

The outdoor Bluestem Amphitheater has a constant stream of entertainment throughout the summer, from the mainstage musical to symphony shows to large concerts.

RedHawks baseball game

A night at the ballpark watching the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks is one of the best summer date ideas in Fargo. General admission tickets are just $7 at the door, and you can grab beers and ballgame food.

Some of the games even have fireworks at the end to really add to the romance.

Hike at Buffalo River State Park

Just 45 minutes outside of Moorhead, MN, you'll find Buffalo River State Park. Fill a backpack with snacks, water, and plenty of sunscreen, and head to the park for a hike along Buffalo River.

Then, spend time picnicking at the park and take a dip in the swimming hole if it's in season.

Lake day trip

We'd be remiss not to mention the Minnesota lake country just over half an hour from Fargo-Moorhead's borders.

Take a ride out to Detroit Lakes, spend a day on the public beach swimming and getting a tan, and then head to one of the lakeside bars followed by pizza at Zorbaz on the Lake.

Attend a summer event:

There are so many things to go to in the summer. Attend niche events like Rare Beer Picnic, or Sister Cities Smokeout. Or, head to some classics like Red River Valley Fair and the Downtown Fargo Street Fair.

Ghost tour at Bonanzaville

For a spooky date idea, head to the pioneer village at Bonanzaville for one of their paranormal ghost tours.

Pumpkin patch outing

Fargo-Moorhead has several pumpkin patches that make a fun day out. Wander through a corn maze, then pick the perfect pumpkins to take home and carve together.

Farmers' markets

Most of Fargo's farmers' markets (including the largest in the state) run through the end of October, so you can get outside, shop for local produce, and hang out with your date while listening to live music and eating great food truck eats.

Haunted fields & corn mazes

It wouldn't be fall without some spooky Halloween dates. Several haunted fields and corn mazes surround the city, so you can take your date (if you dare) for a scary jaunt through these terrifying fields.

NDSU tailgating and football game

NDSU Football returns in full force in the fall. Spend a Saturday with your date at NDSU's nationally-known tailgating parties before heading into the FARGODOME to watch the Bison play. Check out our guide to attending a Bison tailgate for more information on what to expect. 

Fall foliage hike at Buffalo River State Park

45 minutes outside of Fargo's sister city, Moorhead, is the beautiful Buffalo River State Park. Hike amidst the colorful branches of the trees lining Buffalo River for a very fall-esque date.

This park in Downtown Fargo is one of the most romantic and beautiful in the city, especially in winter with trees glittering with snow.

Cross country skiing at Edgewood

For an active outdoor date, rent cross country skis from Edgewood Chalet and hit the snowy trails together.

Snowshoeing

Another outdoorsy option, you can rent snowshoes at Edgewood Chalet or from the Hjemkomst Center and romp through the snowy trails along the Red River of the North.

Ice skating

If you and your date both own ice skates, a great option is Fargo's Broadway Square ice rink.

You'll have views of busy Downtown Fargo and are close enough to stop in one of the coffee shops for a cup of warm cocoa or coffee after your skate.

If you don't own your own skates, you can rent them at the rink!

Red River Zoo excursion

The Red River Zoo stays open all winter long. How? All of its species are cold-weather climate animals that are used to the cold.

Bundle up, grab a hot chocolate, and wander through the exhibits together.

Fargo Force hockey game

Like baseball in the summer, hockey in the winter makes for an excellent date evening. The Fargo Force play at Scheels Arena, so you can watch a game, drink some beers, and eat arena food.

Coffee shop

Lucky for you, Fargo loves craft coffee, so you can skip Starbucks and have a coffee date at one of the cool local coffee shops across the city. If you're in it for the long haul, download the free Caffeinated Crawl passport and visit each local shop to win fun merch.

Winter is long here, so why not make the best of it? Whether you're at Frostival, Christkinlmarkt, or Unglued Craft Fest, you're bound to have a (snow) ball. Pick your favorite itinerary to experience winter now.

Moorhead Dairy Queen

The iconic, walk-up Moorhead Dairy Queen opens every year on March 1, snow or shine (and most likely, it will be snow). What weirder date than to eat ice cream outside together in the snow? Just make sure to dress for the weather.

F-M Derby Girls roller derby

For a non-traditional sports outing, the F-M Derby Girls hosts several roller derby exhibitions throughout the spring. There's something about watching these tough ladies battle it out on a derby track that is just fun.

As soon as the bike rentals open in Lindenwood Park, take your date on a double-seated bike or one of the sitting bikes for a roll through the beautiful park.
