The outdoor baseball experience is a truly special one. Seeing the Minnesota Twins open up Target Field yesterday one couldn’t help but get excited for a summer filled with crackin’ bats and ballpark food. Sadly, it seems that tickets to Target Field may be a bit hard to come by this year. But, just because you might not be able to make it to Target Field doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a similar experience at another one of America’s truly unique ballparks.
In Fargo-Moorhead we have a gem of a facility called Newman Outdoor Field. It may not be Target Field but it is recognized as one of the region’s best. In addition to it being a perfect place to enjoy a little baseball visitors can browse through the Maury Wills Museum. The museum features all types of memorabilia from the 2-time gold glove winner and base stealing extraordinaire. Also, we can’t forget the Guinness Book of World Records. Newman Outdoor Field is home to the largest wooden bat in the world, “Big Bruce” measuring in at 13′-5”. Worth stopping by and checking out all by itself.
As you can probably tell, I am pretty big baseball fan. I think the Twins game yesterday just struck a chord with me. Baseball season is near! I can’t wait for the season to start locally in the F-M area. Taking in a game at Newman Outdoor Field might not be Target Field but with tickets starting at just $5 and concession prices that won’t break the bank it is a great substitute for the “Big league’ experience and is sure to fulfill your desire for the sights, sounds and smells of the game.
May 16th, 2010 marks the start of another season of FM RedHawks baseball and a truly unique experience for visitors seeking an afternoon with America’s Pastime.
