Best Breakfast in Fargo-Moorhead

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m not sure RumChata French Toast and Breakfast Nachos are what people had in mind when making this claim, but let’s not let the details get in the way of a delicious meal.  Although I am not one to eat breakfast outside of the hours of ‘when I wake up to when I eat lunch’, a few of these restaurants do serve breakfast all day. Disclaimer: this is a blog about the breakfast foods, not brunch. Sorry to all my brunchers out there but I am not convinced it is necessary to serve a thanksgiving meal and smoked salmon alongside your perfectly crafted omelet or buttermilk pancakes. Bottomless mimosas on the other hand is another story.

Here is a list of some of my favorite breakfast options from 7 restaurants in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. (In no particular order)

Nichole’s Fine Pastry | Downtown Fargo

Nichole’s Fine Pastry has limited options for breakfast but quiche is always on the menu and it’s always delicious. They also have a wide variety of breakfast pastries from the bakery. They proudly brew Stumbeano’s (local) coffee beans and you can order it any way you like it. Nichole’s does not have wifi so enjoy your morning coffee with a good book or good conversation while being surrounded by handmade local art.


CJ’s Kitchen | South Fargo

If pancakes are your favorite breakfast food item, then you need to try out CJ’s kitchen. Here, breakfast is served all day. They have your traditional buttermilk pancakes but I recommend trying a fruit pancake. Apple is my favorite. Did I mention you should only order one pancake… to share?


The Shack on Broadway | North Fargo

Possibly one of the busiest breakfast joints on this list but The Shack is worth the wait. The have all the classics but Eggs Benedict and Biscuits & Gravy are my go to breakfast options. The Shack offers a great dinner atmosphere with small town hospitality and charm. They even have a counter to belly up and enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee.


Twenty Below Coffee | Downtown Fargo

This coffee house opened in 2014 and has quickly made its mark in the community as one of the best coffee shops in town. They roast their own coffee beans in multiple flavors. This is a great place to grab breakfast by yourself or with a few friends. They offer a 32 oz Chemex to share or try one of their house drinks like the Three Bears Miel, a standard latte made with cinnamon and locally-sourced honey. Their small list of baked goods is thoughtful and always changing with what is in season. They have a variety of waffles on the menu worth trying, whether it is Peach & Thyme or Cornmeal & Berries.

Sandy’s Donuts | West Fargo & Downtown Fargo

Much like Homer Simpson, donuts are my weakness. I could eat donuts anytime of the day, especially if they are from Sandy’s Donuts. What started as a local favorite in West Fargo, Sandy’s has become the go-to place to get donuts in town with a second location in downtown Fargo. I like to stick with the Sour Cream Old Fashioned, but I enjoy the Maple Bacon Long John when I need a little “protein boost” for my most important meal of the day.


Boppa’s Bagels | South Fargo

When I’m not having carbs for breakfast, I am usually having carbs for breakfast. With thirty-one bagel varieties and 17 cream cheese spreads, it would take you almost a year and a half to try every combination. (However, I can’t imagine a peanut butter bagel with sun dried tomato spread tasting very satisfactory.) Boppa’s also has hot breakfast bagel sandwiches with eggs, meats, cheeses or lox. My go to option is the eggs, ham and cheese sandwich on an asiago cheese bagel.

Cajun Café | South Fargo

A Cajun restaurant in the Midwest is probably not top of mind as a great breakfast option in Fargo, North Dakota, but I can guarantee this is at the top of my list for a good, hearty breakfast. They have everything from a traditional 2 eggs, choice of meat and hash browns to a Breakfast Poboy with Boudin Balls on the side.  I love their sweet potato pancakes with cane sugar syrup.  For a more savory breakfast, I recommend the Crawfish Omelet that is stuffed with peppers, onions, and cheese and topped with a southeastern red sauce.
