Silent Movie Night
The Red River Theatre Organ Society will be live streaming its annual Silent Movie Night on October 17th at 7:30 p.m. to raise funds for the ongoing maintenance required to keep its rare Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ playing. The free streams, available for viewing on the organization’s Facebook page and Youtube channel, will feature music, a selection of historic silent films with live accompaniment, and a behind the scenes look at how the Wurlitzer works. Viewers are encouraged to “pay what you can” in lieu of admission through the RRTOS’ website or PO Box.
“Our planning committee was initially unsure if Silent Movie Night would be possible this year,” noted RRTOS President, Ryan Hardy, “but after some brainstorming we realized that we have the opportunity to create a completely new, fully online Silent Movie Night experience.”
This year’s program marks Hardy’s debut accompanying silent films on the Wurlitzer alongside long-time Silent Movie Night organist Lance Johnson. Hardy will score the science fiction film A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès, a French magician who pioneered the use of special effects in film and was most recently portrayed as a character in the 2011 movie Hugo. Johnson will accompany the classic Buster Keaton comedy film, One Week.
The Red River Theatre Organ Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing educational and engaging programming and opportunities for all members of the Fargo, Moorhead, and surrounding communities through the music and art form of the theatre pipe organ.
