German Kulturfest

Join us for a family-friendly celebration of the area’s German and German-American traditions with German Kulturfest! Styled after the many Volkfests celebrations held annually throughout Germany, German Kulturfest offers a full day of food, drink, and entertainment in an effort to preserve and share a prominent piece of the regions local history and heritage.

Food & Drink
Much of the entertainment will take place in the auditorium, where we, Fargo Brewing Company, and Karen’s Kuchens collaborate on a full menu of German food, wine, and beer. This year’s menu includes classics like sauerbraten, currywurst, bratwurst, borscht, red cabbage, warm German potato salad, and several sauerkraut dishes. Dessert will include a dozen varieties of kuchen, as well as German chocolate cookies, icebox cookies, potato chip cookies, and root beer float cookies.

On the mainstage we’re bringing back Dale Dahmen and the Beats after their fantastic performance last year, and we’re adding a new group, Julie Lee and Her White Rose Band, for the second set. The Fargo-Moorhead Opera will perform around non and Joann Stensile will perform throughout the museum as our resident accordian minstrel.

German Market
Throughout the museum, local artists, craftspeople, educators, entertainers, and vendors offer a variety of entertainment, education, and shopping options. Seasoned vets like the Brademeyers (traditional German woodcarving and painting) and In the Chips (German woodcarving) will join our other mainstays, but our expanded focus on German history and heritage includes Old World winter holiday troupe Minnesota Krampus, German science exhibitions from Inspire Innovation Lab, scherenschnitte and crafts tables from Sabrina Hornung and Postal Squirrel, and a mini German film festival moderated by MSUM Film Studies’ The Film Loop. Altogether we’ll be spending our day with more than 30 different vendor, educator, and performance groups.
