Flow by Jo Verdis
Please join us at the Spirit Room in Lotus Studio for Jo Verdis’s “Flow,” an abstract alcohol ink exhibition exploring painting, and art creation as a mindfulness practice to aid in physical recovery.
Jo Verdis was born in San Diego, California and raised in Washington State. Jo studied composition at Baylor University in Texas. In 2006, following her master’s degree at the same institution, Jo moved to Belgium where she continued to study composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. After returning to the United States to pursue a teaching career Jo was afflicted with a traumatic brain injury, changing the trajectory of her artistic life. Finding herself unable to compose she began practicing with alcohol inks as a way of meditation and soon found a true love in passion in the art form.
Assistant Professor Steven Makela from Concordia College has worked tirelessly along with Jo Verdis to bring her exhibit to light. Finding that her work is still inspired by music, Steven Makela has gathered composers Doug Harbin, Carter Rice, Kristi Fullerton, and Noah Bray to create original compositions in collaboration with her work. Join us the evening of the reception for a live performance of these compositions by talented musicians Sonja Harasim, Deb Harris, and John Rose.
Jo Verdis has exhibited work throughout Santa Barbara and often holds alcohol ink workshops for the public.
“Flow” is made possible through funding in part by North Dakota Council on the Arts, the Arts Partnership, Concordia College, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
