Scandinavian Hjemkomst and Midwest Viking Festival

The Scandinavian Hjemkomst and Midwest Viking Festival is a wonderful way to learn a little more about the Nordic culture and the Viking Age. Here in North Dakota, a large percentage of our population is of Scandinavian descent, so many are eager to celebrate the culture!

The food is definitely a highlight of the Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival. If you need a little extra butter and flour in your life, this is the place for you. The Taste of Scandinavia features a variety of food including Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, and Swedish. Each country offers an assortment of items, and you can select a couple items from each country to get a nice smorgasbord! Examples of food on the menus include Lutefisk, Aebleskiver (pancake ball), Icelandic brown bread, Krumkake, meatballs, cabbage, and rice pudding. This year, I indulged in the smoked lamb on brown bread (Icelandic), red cabbage (Danish), Krumkake (Swedish), and a dessert crepe (Icelandic). Everything was delicious. As you can see in the photo below, this food is likely not the most visually stunning food you’ll ever encounter, but it’ll win you over after you take the first bite!

Although the food is a big draw, there’s much more than that to the festival. Over the two days of the festival, entertainment is provided by fiddlers, choral groups, dancers and more. Harald Haugaard is one of the entertainers we were fortunate enough to see. Harald is an extremely talented fiddler, and had several in the crowd tapping their toes to the music! We also got in on some music by the Kringen Accordion Band, a group of local musicians. A sweet old couple danced to a few of the band’s tunes, adding to the festive spirit!  You should also plan to take a bit of time to walk through the vendors and exhibitors–homemade baked goods, beautiful handcrafted pottery, woodworks, crochet, and more. If you’re looking for unique gifts, this is a great shopping opportunity!

Outside, you’ll find the Midwest Viking Festival and Viking Village featuring children’s activities, demonstrations on blacksmithing, coin striking, felting and more! The battle demonstrations are one of the highlights in Viking Village–this year, battle demos take place at 11:30am and 3:00pm.

The Scandinavian Hjemkomst & Midwest Viking Festival is a fun experience for the whole family!
