Hey Canada, We Missed You!

Hey there, neighbors to the North! We have missed seeing you around Fargo during the border closure, but, we’re happy to report that the Canadian borders will be opening for vaccinated travelers to come back to North Dakota.

COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Canadian travelers

All travelers 5 years of age or older, regardless of citizenship or vaccination status, must provide proof of a COVID-19 negative molecular test result to enter Canada or proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days. Rapid antigen tests will not be accepted.

Acceptable test types:

– PCR – Polymerase chain reaction

– Nucleic acid test (NAT) or Nucleic acid amplification test (NAATs)

– Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP)

Travelers should have their test performed at a reputable laboratory or testing facility (i.e., one recognized by the local government or accredited by a third party, such as a professional organization or international standards organization).

Testing locations & information

Cass County Public Health:

Register for a FREE PCR test in Fargo at testreg.nd.gov to set up an appointment time at Cass County Public Health, 3051 25th St S, Suite K, Fargo, ND.

Appointments are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. These test results may take up to 72 hours to return.

CVS Pharmacy:

Offers PCR testing weekdays from 10 a.m. – 3:50 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. – 3 p.m at 1714 Center Ave W, Dilworth, MN. Call (218) 287-5147 to make an appointment.

Results are available within 24-48 hours via email. Documentation for border crossing is included. Depending on timing and exposure, a $139 fee may be charged.

Former Thomas Edison Elementary School:

Offers Saliva and Rapid testing at 1110 S 14th St, Moorhead, MN. The hours are Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. & Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost for out-of-state residents is $90.

Results can take up to 72 hours, but many are available within 24-48 hours. More information can be found on the Clay County website, you may also call 1-800-800-5698 (dial 9 to speak to an agent).

For short trips less than 72 hours:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons traveling to the United States are allowed to do their pre-entry molecular test before they leave Canada. If your test is more than 72 hours old when you re-enter Canada, you’ll be required to get a new pre-entry molecular test in the United States.

What to do at the Border

When you arrive at the border, you must present an accepted negative molecular test result (paper or electronic proof). You must show proof of your test results even if you:

– have tested negative for COVID-19 before the 72-hour period
– have been vaccinated for COVID-19
– recovered from COVID-19 and no longer test positive
– recovered from COVID-19 and continue to test positive

Keep proof of your test results with you for the 14-day period that begins on the day you enter Canada.
