It is National Tourism Week and to celebrate the FM Visitors Bureau is hosting a special exhibit featuring the wood chipper from the Oscar-winning film ‘FARGO‘. It is hard not to remember the infamous wood chipper scene if you have seen the movie. Already we are seeing visitors surprised to see it and getting in on the fun of the unique photo ops.
So why wood chippers? Well, it is pretty simple…tell someone that you are from Fargo-Moorhead and they say, “Like the movie?” or “oh yeah, the wood chipper!” There’s really no way around it! We’ve had lots of visitors come to town asking about the movie and looking for photo ops and were shocked that we didn’t have something from the movie to show off..so we put our thinking caps on and naturally our attention was drawn to the “ruby slippers” from the film.
It all started out with building a replica for the park outside the Visitor Center for visitors to use as a year-round photo op, then sure enough…we tracked down the owner of the real thing and decided to attempt to put together an exhibit to celebrate National Tourism Week.
We contacted Milo Durben, the owner of the wood chipper and asked him if he would be willing to help tourism in Fargo-Moorhead by allowing us to put the wood chipper on display. He agreed and even took it one step further by borrowing us his personal collection of ‘FARGO” memorabilia. Milo was a Dolly Grip on the set of the film and had access to some great pieces. But, how did he end up with the wood chipper? We asked him…Here’s his response”:
The launch of “The Wood Chipper in Fargo” Exhibit is tomorrow and will run throughout the month of May during the visitor center’s regular hours. We look forward to seeing you and get ready to say “cheese!”
